Shorty Long, who had one big hit in 1968 with “Here Comes the Judge”, was born Frederick Earl Long in Birmingham, Alabama.

Jackie Trent, songwriting partner and future wife of Tony Hatch, topped the British chart for one week with a song they’d written together, “Where Are You Now (My Love)”.

20 May 1960
Following their audition with impresario Larry Parnes and Billy Fury, The Silver Beetles - later to become The Beatles - embarked on their first ever tour as backing group for singer Johnny Gentle on his tour of Scotland.

Gentle was impressed with The Silver Beetles and gave them their own spot on the bill and also suggested to Parnes that he sign them to his stable. He declined, preferring to concentrate on his solo artists instead.
